I've just found Scid on Synaptics Package Manger, a chess database. I installed it but it doesn't appear in menu applications. What's happened?
I've also tried to install jin, I downloaded it from the website. Now I have this file jin-2.14.1.tar.gz
How can I install it?

if it is a database, it is probably part of another program. you may need the other part first.

How to install anything in ubuntu (http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/)

Scid can be started by using the command 'scid' in a terminal. If you want to add it to your menu, simply right-click the Applications menu and choose 'Edit Menus'.

As for Jin, right-click the tar.gz file and choose to extract it. Then enter the new directory created, double click the file named 'jin', and choose 'run'. I think you need Java installed for Jin to run.
