Rules:

Forum guidelines on content apply. In other words, safe for kids and safe for work.

Try not to quote embedded images; take a moment to snip them out.

Off-topic posts will be edited or moved.

Thumbnail your image, or use the forum's attachment system. Full-size embedded images are annoying and will be snipped mercilessly.

Take a moment and tell everyone the details of your desktop, such as the theme name, the wallpaper name, the icons and any programs you're using in the image.

Enjoy!

Since I posted my desktop in the previous thread just two hours ago, I take the liberty of reposting it here.

It's KDE 4.1 with the Arezzo plasma theme and the Oxygen window decoration (without the ugly stripes) and icons.
The wallpaper is from Florian Freundt (http://florian.freundt.org/W_Vector.html) (I have three of them to rotate every five minutes) and I use Legendum (http://home.kabelfoon.nl/%7Eslam/fonts/fonts.html) as system font. All in all pretty straightforward but the idea is to look beautiful without distracting me from my work.

oooooooooooooooooh! i see. i thought it was like a "london calling is the best album of the '80s" kind of thing.

openbox, pypanel, deadbinkies font. the wallpaper was made from a vidcap of a 'dark knight' (is that what it's called?) clip. i tried to give it a hopper-esque/richard estes kind of look. i'm not sure i was successful, but i like it enough for it to last another forty-five minutes.

It's a KDE 4 plasmoid (http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Plasma/Plasmoids#Comic_Strip) that shows a comic from the internet. Garfield is the only comic it has that I like though.

Not quite August yet for me, but I guess I'll get a head start by reposting my last entry to the July thread:

http://random.ogunderground.com/workstation/anytime/thumbs/human_dark_murrina.png (http://random.ogunderground.com/workstation/anytime/human_dark_murrina.png) http://random.ogunderground.com/workstation/anytime/thumbs/human_dark_murrina2.png (http://random.ogunderground.com/workstation/anytime/human_dark_murrina2.png)

Normally I'd be running Cairo-Dock, but I stick to the newest SVN revision which is currently broken such that it seg faults soon after starting. Theme is another variation of my Fusion-Live Dark Murrina, set up for a more Human orange than my ITT one. Despite being on Intrepid, the wallpaper is of course the background-only Hardy wall.

I completely missed the update in Intrepid that gave us tabbed Nautilus and only noticed it because I accidentally hit Ctrl+T when moving my screenshots around.

I've gone back to having Nautilus render my desktop on my laptop so I could set up all three of my machines in the same way.

Do people generally create a new desktop look every month?I haven't technically changed my GTK+ theme since 2006. Of course, I've tweaked it a lot (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Murrina-Black?content=46287). Since '06, I've had maybe 6 or 7 WM themes but that's due largely to changing window manager (metacity to emerald to openbox to xfwm to emerald again). I've probably changed my icon theme just as many times. Most of my changes come in the form of wallpapers, though.

In the file manager how did you get the "desktop" folder to be replaced by an icon? I didn't think this was possible in Gnome.

Openbox, shouldn't you know? :)

I could see any window decorations, so I wasn't sure.

it would hilarious if that were one of his themes you're using too.
It wouldn't be the first time I inquired after one of my own themes... :-k

Here is my August desktop (same as late July):

Openbox 3.4.7 with the Children of the Earth Openbox and Gtk theme, Gion icons, Corbel fonts, and this wallpaper (http://customize.org/wallpapers/49037) (tinted with hsetroot).

The dock at the bottom of the screen consists of bbdock (hacked, so its icons are smaller than 64x64), lal, bbpager and docker.

Cool desktop, how do you get a terminal on your desktop?

Thanks. Here you can find a howto

http://icehot.wordpress.com/2008/05/11/ubuntu-hardy-tutorial-embed-terminal-into-your-desktop/

It's the one I followed but I added more window rules like can't close, can't move and other. Have fun :D

This may or may not be the latest version, though.

Wow. Actually, the most recent version, FOR NOW, is hosted in the following link:

That other version you pointed to wasn't compatible with the current folder naming in GNOME. I hope this new version will work for that other poster who asked for the Eikon theme.

I changed the gnome-fs-directory.png in Eikon directory with the one from Crashbit/places/192x192 folder. But still no go. Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

Try the most current version of the theme (link provided above). Also, use the 128x128 icon, since that's the size of the other Eikon icons.

In the file manager how did you get the "desktop" folder to be replaced by an icon? I didn't think this was possible in Gnome.

Again, that isn't Gnome. It's Xfce, and the file manager is Thunar, not Nautilus. However, I think you can make a custom desktop icon in Gnome (on Hardy) like so:

Save this code as ~/Desktop/.directory

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Directory
BgImage=
Icon=desktop
Name=Desktop

Okay, here's my present desktop:

http://mobysun-storage.wen.ru/Images/Screenshot06.png

The desktop background you see is 1 of 10 wallpapers that Desktop Drapes shuffles every 15 minutes.

The theme is Bluebuntu, and the font on the panels and in the window titles is Ariel Black from the Microsoft Truetype Core Fonts package.

I've also got KDE installed on my computer, but I haven't personalized it yet. Maybe next month.

EDIT: Huh?!! How come the image of my desktop isn't shown??

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04LTS (Hardy Heron), with (of course) the Gnome desktop. The theme is a minor customization of Clearlooks. Running programs were the terminal, a nautilus window, and Mixx 1.6.0 Beta2 (a favorite of mine. The backdrop is a nifty little photo I took on an international excursion; it's one of the (I think three) volcanoes on Lake Panahachel (sp?) in Guatamala.

Another thing you can try is to right-click on the desktop icon in nautilus, choose properties, then click on the folder icon in the dialogue box. This should let you choose a custom icon (although it will still carry the desktop emblem).

go to the link he posted here:

then once it downloads extract it where you downloaded it to
go inside the folder and right click either folder and select "create archive" (make sure to do this to both of them)
after that go to your desktop and right click it and select "change desktop background"
go to the "theme" tab
click the "install" button
and go to where you have your files and install the tars.

Here we are

This is an evolution of my previous screen (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5475950#post5475950) with a different background and an improved translucent top bar.

As always the specs are available upon request.
I love that wallpaper. Could you share it with us? Please?:guitar:

I just posted my desktop at the end of last month, so I need to tweak it a bit before I post one for this month.

Wordle is indeed a great website.

I inserted the text of Unitarian Universalism's seven Principles, UU's six Sources and also part of the text explaining the history of the Flaming Chalice symbol, picked a colour scheme and clapped my hands with joy when I saw Coolvetica was available. Then I just added the Chalice to the screenshots of the word clouds I got (to give the impression the words and principles expressed emanate from the flame), and voilą, a wallpaper to go with these days of quiet reflection after Knoxville's shootings. I did the same to create the banner of a blog I'm planning to open.

Also in the pics, the theme Glow Water, with the usual Eikon icons, Calibri bold 8 (Helvetica 9 on my Conky) and once again the Chalice at my Xfce menu.

Oh, and by the way, don't even try to go to Wordle using the IcedTea version of Java. I nearly lost my mind before I found out it only works with Sun's official version. At least in my PC it does.

This is my latest Desktop. I prefer the Windows Layout, but absolutely love me some Compiz. The Second shot is me ridin' dirty with a Windows VM on the left, and TVtime playing HGTV on the right. The third shot shows my latent Ubuntu screen cap, reppin' for Canonical. I really don't understand why the default Ubuntu setup doesn't look more like this. It would make life a lot more comfortable for recent Windows converts.

For the third time, it's Xfce. Actually, it's not even Ubuntu. It's Debian (cf. menu icon).

People have been complaining about the default Ubuntu artwork for years. Personally, I like it because I think it's distinct. It's not gray and blue like nearly every other distro (Debian, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva, Dreamlinux, etc.). However, the Blubuntu project seeks to "alleviate" this.

That wallpaper is a cartoon Monument Valley, right?

Very nice!

Thank ya..

I wonder if anyone notices the fundamental ideology that's defined in my themes..

I despise clutter (my definition anyway).

I'm very particular about color matching wallpapers to window borders or the GTK colors or whatever.

None of my wallpapers have actual graphics on them.. They are very simple backdrops.

I don't understand the value of Conky, Icons on the desktop (I use XFCE, if I want it, it's on my right click menu.)

That's what's beautiful about this window managers, you can pretty much change them to whatever you want.. It's great.

Wow, nice one. That is very similar to how mine looks today (I changed it after going through this thread....).

PS I feel a look like this would be a MUCH better default look for newcomers, especially from Windows. Make it familiar, comfortable, but better. That's a sure recipe for market domination, which I think should be Ubuntu's goal now.

Most of my clients are corporate users, teachers, people who need MS Office badly until they realize that Open Office is just as good, but are afraid of change. For them, the setup I just showed provides LOTS of wow, and all for free, and with better included apps:

Firefox
Transmission
Pidgin
Open Office
Gimp
Rhythmbox
VLC

I've made more WOW kind of designs, but many conservative computer users (primarily in offices) can actually become frightened by too radical designs. Most of them are frightened by default Ubuntu, and not just because of the brown (though they universally dislike that as well), but because there are two panels (WHAT DO I DO!?!?).

I concur with this. For someone who is enthusiastic about computers, 'bling' will capture their attention. However, for the majority of people who'd sooner they didn't have to use a computer at all, obviousness; simplicity; readability and familiarity are key to making their user experience as pain-free as possible.

Dude, she's a drawing.

.She's the representation of the young, sexually mature human form with nice proportions; symmetry and a smooth texture. Unrealistic and surreal as it may be, more than 100,000 years of mammalian/ape/human evolution is telling me to mate with it and spread my seed because my offspring would be the genetically better for it.

Alternatively, 20 years of flawed upbringing is telling me to resent and be suspicious of it.

This is my lightly-customized Gnome desktop from Intrepid, using the Darklooks theme, whose default availability I am not sure of.

As a side note, I don't mean to deride any of the beautiful desktop setups posted here, but does anyone else find that each and every subpixel-antialiased font (maybe with the exception of the one with Myriad Pro, which is rather pricey) sucks out loud? I am using MgOpen Cosmetica for mostly everything, but I cannot stand seeing the lack of contrast and sharpness it or any other font used here presents. To my eyes it's like the whole screen has been rendered with a JPEG quality setting of around 75, particularly on dark backgrounds.

Is there a happy compromise between aliasing and antialiasing? Fonts with Ubuntu have so many variables (hinting, Autohinter/Native, BCI/non-BCI) yet I can't produce something that is clear and has proper kerning. Windows' ClearType is awful, and OS X looks too bold and still shows a lot of artifacts around edges; maybe I'm just not cut out for this blurry font business? :)

Cool. You will like WGU very much. If you want the two WGU Desktop pics I made just e-mail me at jrhodesATmy.wgu.edu. I wish you all the best in your studies...

I am taking the Bachelor of Arts in Social Science degree program so I can become a secondary Social Science teacher. After I graduate I will take the Master of Arts in Teaching - Social Science degree at WGU. Once that is done I will get an Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) or a Ph.D. in Education or History (haven't decided yet) somewhere (most likely Walden University or WGU if they have them in three years).

Since I love everything about US history and politics I thought it was the natural program for me to take once I moved to the USA from Canada. The program is very demanding but I enjoy all the reading, essay writing, etc. My mentor is great too - you will find out how important they can be once you get into your studies.

Hahahaha,

I laughed for well over 5 minutes when I saw your logo, so I just had to share my mirth :D.

I think I'll keep a copy of that, it's very good!

Two questions:

- What narrow font is that you're using and where can I get it?

- How do I get a Pidgin contacts list like that. Is it a Pidgin plugin or do I need screenlets/desklets or some manner of widget engine?

As said in the terminal in the screenshot, the font is Futura-Condensed-Normal Ultra-Light 9

It is a screenlet called PidginScreenlet (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/PidginScreenlet?content=72611)

Please, no one 'correct' this post or make smartarse comments about my 'refund being in the mail'. I've had a headache all day and just as I get rid of it, my bookmarks reach critical mass, requiring me to sort through them. After nearly two hours of stumbling over drag-and-drop visibility in Firefox, while trying to do this quickly before going to bed, I need to vent my technocidal rage:

I finally got my new pictures made. I wanted to include a shot of the desktop sphere but it wouldn't come out right. The first wallpaper is a slightly modified version of the wallpaper from this topic (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=877001) (cropped to fit my screen res), the second is from a series of wallpapers made for the Colorado LoCo Team (http://joey.ubuntu-rocks.org/blog/2008/07/27/colorado-ubuntu-wallpaper/), the third is a wallpaper I made from a picture on the LA Dodgers website, and the fourth wallpaper is from a series my sister made (http://nancib.wordpress.com/2007/10/25/we-have-wallpapers/). Apps visible in the first screen are Firefox (with the MacOSX Theme), Sonata, Google Gadgets and Avant Window Navigator. The other details are in the AWN Terminal in the first screen.

I usually have one wallpaper across the four desktops, but I wanted to show off the four wallpapers I use most among about 180 wallpapers rotated with Wallpaper Tray.

ETA: I added two more pictures of what I have on my skycaps. The top is from a site that seems to be down now, and the bottom is a wallpaper I got from the Dodgers website. Both are part of the wallpaper rotation.

Personally, I think pypanel makes a great Openbox companion. It's in the Ubuntu repos.

For the menu, see this article: http://crunchbang.org/archives/2008/03/14/invoke-openboxs-menu-with-xdotool/

Then you can make a pypanel launcher whose command will launch the Openbox menu :D

I wish pypanel could autohide when placed on the top. I was about to start using it today, but it would only autohide when it was on the bottom. Kind of annoying.

RiceMonster

Eh, pcmanfm has never worked well for me. It would always crash when I was using Ubuntu, and now on Arch, I haven't been able to get it to mount my external hard drive with the right permissions, whereas Thunar does it right away. Just stay with Thunar. In my opinion, the only advantage for pcmanfm is tabs.

cicatriz, would you mind posting your wallpaper?
It's fantastic!

Trayer -
