64 Bit Hardy Upgrade hanging at Generating Locale

I have a new computer, a 64 bit. Upgraded all the 7.10 files, and then did the upgrade in manager to Hardy, Its been fine until it got to generating locales, and now its been stuck for over 10 minutes

any ideas what I need to do now? i am three minutes from it being done

Did you fully update your Gutsy before upgrade? Did you remove all third parties from /etc/apt/sources.list before upgrade?

No, this was installed for me, and I had no idea that was needed to be done.
I was unable to recover a boot / log in screen, so I hope this is not stupid, but I had the 32 bit disk , loaded it , running it now.
Will I be able to use this until I can get a 64 bit disk sent to me?
