[SOLVED] Updating Ubuntu 8.04 problems

I am having some MAJOR problems updating Ubuntu 8.04. The download and installation are a success and the reboot is a success. But when I shut down my computer and restart it, it just stops at a black screen. How can I fix this?
SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS:
Gateway ML3109
ATI Mobility Radeon 200M---Restricted Driver installed
Intel Celeron M processor @ 1.6Ghz
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Stable Release.
2 Gigabytes of RAM

I seem to have the same problem. Login screen not there? Did you find a fix for this?
