View Full Version : [ubuntu] 2.6.24-19 Kernel upgrade problem

I was running kernel 2.6.24.-16 and upgraded (or so I thought) to 2.6.24-19. During installation a window appeared with several options that previous kernel upgrades on other machines didn't appear. The options were regarding updating menu.lst. I chose to leave grub due to grub 'error 22' messages but now only the earlier kernel appears when booting up.

Any ideas how to get to the latest kernel version and will the 'menu' only appear once as this was a newly installed version of Hardy Heron?

TIA

Edeit menu.lst. Copy what you have at the beginning on top and change .16 to .19. Save>File Save, exit and reboot.
Edit:
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Thanks for the prompt reply. Will try that but is the pop-up menu a new addition and does it appear for each kernel in future?

What pop up menu?

During installation of the kernel a side window appeared with radio buttons and you had to select one option out of about 7 including leaved menu.lst, update menu.lst etc...

Without selecting an option would mean the installation process wouldn't continue.

Always choose the 'Mantainer's Option'

Is there a way to get this to appear again as I chose "leave menu.lst" option due to grub boot errors?

BTW, I changed the kernel to 19 and get a few init.rd messages and then black screen. Am using 16 at present.

If you are using kernel 16; you are booting in recovery mode. What exactly happens when you try to boot 19?

I edited the -19 line in grub to boot into 16 again. If I use -19 I get the black screen. Maybe linked to Nvidia problem on another thread with this kernel?

If you installed before a proprietary driver through the Virtual Terminal; then you must install it again for kernel 19.

I upgraded the driver via restricted driver option after vanilla install with -16 kernel. I uninstalled the kernel (I think) but what is needed to install the kernel now? And what to do about nvidia driver if black screen again?

BTW when I accepted the maintainer's option grub screwed up again and gave me error 22. I have to change (1,6) to 0,6) to boot in menu.lst

Dowload appropriate driver from nvidia site. Install through Virtual Terminal.

Think I will wait for next kernel as not sure what packages are needed and hopefully the nvidia problem will be gone then.
