I am a new user to Ubuntu and relatively new to Linux.

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 to a desktop machine hard drive.

So far I really like it.

I have a laptop computer that can boot from a usb flash drive.

I want to install Ubuntu 8.04 to an 8GB flash drive and run it on the laptop.

Is there a way to do that?

Can I simply copy my hard drive installation to the flash drive?

If that is not possible, can I boot from the live CD and then install a copy to the flash drive?

All ideas and help is appreciated.

It's not a simple as that.

Check out this site: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/
It has lots of guides for various distro's, including Ubuntu.

Thanks for that info. Using the Ubuntu 8.04 instructions on that site, I managed to install a copy to an 8 GB flash drive. It worked on original boot. But after I changed a few settings such as font sizes and desktop background, it would not boot on a second try.

I really like Ubuntu, but I find it quite difficult to install with the terminal commands. I would hope that somewhere in the future a much simpler "install to flash drive" option would be available from within the program itself.

For the time being, I have installed a version of Pendrive Linux which has a much easier process that does not require the terminal command functions. It is working and I can work with it until there is a better option for Ubuntu.
