I installed Ubuntu v. 8.4.1 about a week ago. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache graphics card (two years old) on a desktop with an AMD 4200+ 64-bit CPU and a Samsung Syncmaster 960B LCD monitor, which I always operate in portrait mode.

Everything was OK initially, but two days ago, when I tried to open a terminal, I got nothing but a blank white rectangle into which I could not type. I couldn’t get rid of it either without emergency measures. I have no other problem at all, unlike a previous report by someone in which a blank white terminal was accompanied by a number of difficulties. This was not a problem in previous versions (I have used Ubuntu from v. 6.4 on).

Any idea what’s going on?
