Ubuntu 8.04; Open Office 2.4.1; Firefox 3.0.1; Gnome;

My computer was just sitting for a few hours & I came back & desktop background pict was gone tho the new color I picked for the background was there.

(This happened once before & I put pict back but somehow didn't expect it to happen again.)

Then I happened to root around & pick a default printer. Then it occurred to me that if I Restarted, my desktop pict might return. When I Restarted (I usually "Shutdown"), the desktop came back with all but one of the little jpegs custom picts for my Links gone leaving blank white page icons with turned down corner. I tried Shutdown & rebooting, but that didn't help.

Is there some place where the desktop is stored so I can restore it? (The desktop had been stable for days.) I'm brand new to ubuntu & this makes me so uneasy about reliability which as a writer is all that matters to me really.
