I'm using 8.04 on an Acer 5920G laptop.

When I run off of the battery (which isn't very often) I get a battery icon appear in the bar near the clock.

I've also got an applet type icon that has been added to the top panel which also gives the remaining power.

However, they never agree. The automatic one (near the clock) is always about ten minutes less than the one on the bar.

I'm assuming that the one that comes up automatically is part of Ubuntu and possibly more accurate. Is that the case?

battery charge monitor is way better than power manager. Especially if you are also using a scaling program such as powernowd or something like powertop.

The latter two programs you can use to let your laptop life longer when running on batteries. the first (powernowd) runs as a daemon and scales your CPU to usage. The second one disables power consuming stuff you don't use anyhow.
