I have a MacBook C2D with 8.04 and wmii installed, and I use an external 1680x1050 monitor. Using xrandr I set it up so that the laptop screen is off and the external monitor is on. Every 3-4 minutes, the screen flickers for a split second. This continues until a few hours after I boot up the monitor goes blank with the backlight still on. <edit> It just happened again, but this time instead of going black, it turned olive green. Your guess is as good as mine.</edit> Killing X gets me back to GDM, but the external screen is still blank. Stopping GDM and starting X directly doesn't help, and I've tried killing X a few times. The only solution I've found it rebooting. Here's my xorg.conf:

I had the same problem with my HP laptop running 8.04. Finally I installed Compiz from synaptic then rebooted just for grins. Within the Compiz config settings (system>preferences>advanced desktop effects>general options>display settings) I let it auto detect the refresh rate, which I noticed dropped from 60 to 50, and it took care of all my flickering problems plus there is all kinds of cool stuff for the 3D settings. :KS

I don't use compiz or gnome. I use wmii.
