Geany is an editor, not a compiler. It can call the compiler if it is installed.
See the sticky on how to install and use common compilers.

You should first save the file to compile it in geany

"sudo apt-get install build-essential" will give you most of what you need.

You didn't say which language you are using, but the sticky will lead you to the answer.

Assuming you have the compiler installed as described above, you need to point Geany to the location of the compiler if i remember correctly. It's somewhere in the preferences.

Also make sure you use the template file. If you use a blank file and save it as a cpp or py it still won't let you build or compile. But I never had a problem with it pointing to the compiler.
I installed Geany from the Add/Remove programs so I think it knew already where to find the G++ compiler.
