[SOLVED] xdg menu/Gnome menus

Can anyone tell me how to use xdg to build dynamic menus based on the Gnome menus?

I was able to do this in PCLinuxOS, but I can't seem to find examples of the syntax or commands to do it in Ubuntu.

I have found workable solutions (for now) in another thread.

I used update-menus as a user, instead of root, and that seemed to fix my menus in Windowmaker, but not Gnome. However, in Gnome, there is a mechanism to have the menu items not show, show I guess this is solved for now.
