Login errors

i've just installed ubuntu and its telling me my username and password are wrong... i've tryed one of the change passwords tutorials and it still wont let me login

I also have been locked out (two times, different systems). One was while upgrading and another wouldn't let me use 'root' and then next reboot locked out.

Very disturbing!!!
