I'd try to find a board that uses an Intel integrated video card if you want compiz on the cheap. Your best bet might be building on the Atom desktop board (it's about $75 for the board, which includes the CPU) which has a GMA950. All you really need to add is RAM and hard drive

Why dont you try System 76. They have computers with Ubuntu preinstalled for about that price.

you must be crazy to purchase a pentium 4 (high power cosumption, sluggish performance)

worst thing you can get. i had one..

anything is better than a p4, celeron 420/440 beats it hands down n is 40% it's power consumption or go with AMD

its a pentium 4 so it is a single core processor. You can think of the current processors are 2,3 or 4 of those all in one. Honestly you will have a hard time finding a good PC for that price retail with xp or vista. The basic versions of XP or vista are both around $100 leaving you not much for the PC itself. If you really want to aim for that price point you are going to want to start looking at used PCs. so ebay or craigslist would be a nice place to start.

well if used or refurbished isnt an option i think you are best off just saving up your money until you can get something that isnt already several years out of date. The pentium 4 was released in 2000.

Everex gPC at Walmart=$199. It runs gOS, which is Ubuntu based but I don't think it is a screaming machine. 1.5 ghz Via processor. It's gonna run Ubuntu but I don't know if it is capable of the cool effects. Everex gBook, 15" screen laptop, $379. Dell has things did they mention MadTux?

Check out the local Best Buys, Ciruit City, Compusa, etc. They usually stock some cheap Compaqs or Acer desktops.

Id say get at least the basic inspiron 530 with an upgrade from the 2.0 GHz celeron to the 2.0Ghz core 2. Also do a ram upgrade from 1 GB to 2GB. That puts in in about th $400 range. Save up for that instead of getting the old crappy pentium 4.

Check out your local retailers. I bought a Compaq Presario Intel Dual Core 1.8GHz, 3GB RAM, Intel X3100 Video Chipset, DVDRW, 160GB HDD, Card Reader, Atheros card, Nice Altec Lansing speakers, the works...for only $430 plus tax @ Office Max. I know it's a little over your budget, but I'm just saying you can probably find deals like this when you walk in a place like Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, or places alike. It's a pretty decent machine for a small price tag (I saved about 200 bucks). You can see the laptop yourself at the compaq website and customize it (It's a C700) and with those specs it's a bit over $600.

I hope you have the best of luck with whatever you buy man.

yeah...i was comparing stuff to best buy and it seems they sell the PCs about 50-90 dollars more than on small busnesses selling PCs...
