One of Gnome's Google's summer of code project was to allow for different wallpapers for workspaces. James Sharpe undertook the project and has a working version. His blog has a demonstration video about it.

In the comments he has written that it should most likely be included in Gnome 2.24 and hence in Ibex.

Please digg this story, and hopefully get it to the front page. This exposure will assist it getting into 2.24 (fingers crossed).

Key word: Workspaces.
This is not compatible with the viewports used in Compiz, which has been acknowledged by the author.

Exactly. The people (like me:)) who would want this probable use compiz or
some other window compositing program so it doesn't help them.:(

But he states

The trouble with viewports is there isn’t really a way to enumerate them consistently since they can be placed and sized anywhere. If you can come up with a way of enumerating the viewports to create a consistent gconf key name then it wouldn’t be much work to add viewport support.

The solution is not far off, if someone can assist him with this enumeration.

True but it loaded slow so I am not sure how it would be if you
used it with The Cube.It appeared that it simply changed the wallpaper
depending on what number of workspace you are on.So I don't believe it
would work good with a cube.

I doubt that I have seen apps. that do this and they are very slow, from the video it was quite responsive when he changed desktops.
