Hey all, absolute noob with Linux, I'm trying to install the creative drivers for my X-Fi sound card.
This is what I'm getting in Terminal:

rick@rick-desktop:~/Creative/XFiDrv_Linux_US-1.18$ sudo ./installer
[sudo] password for rick:

..readme txt removed for clarity..

Installation is in progress. Please wait...

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
make: *** [all] Error 2
make: *** [install] Error 2
Installation Unsuccessful
rick@rick-desktop:~/Creative/XFiDrv_Linux_US-1.18$

Probably something very basic that I'm missing but, hey, I'm new at this :)

Any help would me appreciated

In a terminal:

sudo apt-get install build-essentials

Then try it again. If it still doesn't work, be sure to post if it's the same error or not.

Thanks for replying Tim, I get this when I enter what you suggested:

rick@rick-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install build-essentials
[sudo] password for rick:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package build-essentials

When I then try to run the installer I get the same error as above.

Should be:

sudo apt-get install build-essential
("essential" not in plural)

then try again.

Thanks Hashimoto, thats fixed that, but still no go on the driver install.

Hey, it's been a while but I got caught up with RL issues, I've just had time to play with this, I installed OSS drivers instead ( see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4874981&postcount=2 ) and they work like a charm. Thanks again for all the help.
