How do I change my graphical environment to vanilla XFCE from xubuntu-desktop? I can't find anything on the topic. Also, will vanilla XFCE run much slower than xubuntu-desktop?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just install the Xfce packages individually. However, there's no reason to do this. Xubuntu includes a pretty clean Xfce setup.

XFCE should be in synaptic package manager. named XFCE4 i think
you could always install it from source
http://www.xfce.org/download/

or try another XFCE distro

I agree with cardinals_fan regarding the xfce implementation in Xubuntu.

If you need further information though please refer to Psychocats guides at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.

It was really awful in Gutsy. But they cleaned up most of the bloat for Hardy.
