You could try Krita (requires kdelibs and some koffice libs).

You can run Photoshop itself using Wine (up to CS2)
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=17
Also;
http://code.google.com/p/paint-mono/

Hope this helps.

Why not GIMP?
If you need 16bit per channel then there is also cinepaint or Film GIMP.

I think some people e.g. myself get put off by the interface. Some like it, but I am one of those that really dislikes it.

ah... im going to be trying to set something like this up in about a week... my flatmate is a professional photographer, and although she's tried gimp and likes it, there a few functions she's not comfortable with / able to do with it... yet.
but she's just bought an ubuntu laptop, to take roving with her!
so, how easy is it to set up a virtual machine for photoshop? is there a quick n easy guide someone could point out to me? i'll be watching this thread for other tools that come up too...
thanks folks!

try virtualbox for virtualization.
Only drawback, virtualization requires a lot of internal ram.

Virtual machines are quite easy to setup - but please remember that a virtual Windows machine still requires a valid Windows license. If you run Photoshop under Wine, you do not need a Windows license (unless you are using some of the Microsoft DLL files).
