View Full Version : How many processes are you running?

Dr Small
July 23rd, 2008, 03:20 AM
How many processes are you currently running on your system? To find out how many you are running, just run this simple command to output the number:

ps aux | wc -l

Please list your DE/WM and a few apps you have running. Let's see who has the lowest! :)

Mine is currently:

[drsmall@darkghost ~]$ ps aux | wc -l
56
I am running Openbox, Conky, Pypanel and Feh :)

Probably don't need avahi-daemon
You could probably get rid of a few of your terminals (comment them out in /etc/inittab)
I don't know if you need / want hal and networkmanager (I don't use either)

Honestly, though, none of these are total resource-hogging monsters anyway.

when i stopped hal in sysv-rc-conf, couldnt get an internet connection

That's probably because you're using networkmanager to get the connection.
Like I said, though, it's not exactly that taxing to keep it anyway.

That is not an issue. Out of the 142 processes that are "running" here, only 4 are actually running at this time. Also, UNIX systems tend to have large numbers of small programs. For instance, one process for the panels, one for the desktop background / file browser, one for each notification applet, one for each file system backend implementation etc.

By the way, I'd like to know the proper terms for "running" and "actually running".

when I stoped hal in sysv-rc-conf I could not type username and pass in login screen. Ctrl-Alt-F1 worked fine.
