hopefully someone can help me, I have a NEC versa sx laptop, 400mhz , 96MB ram, and I want to install Xubuntu, new to linux but want to give it a try. it will install and run XP with no problems, but will not recognise any of the xubuntu cds not the live, alternative, or desktop. I made sure they were correctly burned and all that, so it must be an issue with the laptop it's self. what I'm wondering is if there is a way to install xubuntu from within windows and then delete windows leaving a clean install of xubuntu. it has a non-bootable usb port but no floppy drive. really want to give this a try, but don't see myself having the money for a hardware upgrade anytime soon.

You could try something like unetbootin (http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html) With that amount of ram I would suggest trying to use the alternate iso instead of the desktop one. Its a text base installer and uses less ram.

ok, I downloaded unetbootin and ran it, here were the results,
1st try, selected the netinstall, it downloaded some files and rebooted, went through the country and keyboard settings, then told me that no network interfaces interfaces were found, which is obviously bs because I just downloaded unetbootin with it.
second try,put ISO on usb flash drive, opened unetbootin, it spent an hour copying all the files only to find out that it had installed it on the same flash drive that it came from, which is not bootable.
third try, opened unetbootin, set it to extract from the flash drive, and target to C drive, another hour of waiting, reboot, and it tells me that the CD-rom drive can't be mounted, which it doesn't need because all the files were already copied to C...
please tell me what I'm doing wrong, I've spent three days trying to get this to work and can't understand why an install should be this complicated.

I have never had a problem with it not finding my nic, so I am not sure what you can do from here, except maybe have a look at this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=427540) and see if you can get a solution.
