So, I've been looking into options for when I get a new computer and I came across this place: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

Basically it's a place where they'll build stuff for you and you can specify exactly what you want in a computer. The most interesting part is that both desktops and laptops are available with no OS installed. They also give you the option of having them partition the drive for you beforehand.

Also, if you take a look at their "ultra-portable" laptops, one of the OS options is Hardy!

So, just thought I'd let you guys know. I haven't done any business with them yet (as I need money for a new computer first!) but if I do, I'll definitely report back. I just thought it'd be useful, as before now the only options I've found (other than the usual "barebones" desktops) have either been high-end (£1000+) systems or the ultra-cheap Tesco computers that someone found.

:)

Novatech used to supply PC's and laptops without an OS installed, and their reputation is pretty good.

I used to have a Novatech laptop and it eventually fell apart (literally, screws fell out and the case cracked) and then the motherboard died.

They still do. I've used them for years, never had any problems whatsoever. Never had to return goods, always got what I paid for etc.

I might have to have another look into them when I get round to buying a new system then.

Well then, I guess this is turning into a general thread about stuff like this...

Another one to know about is EfficientPC (http://efficientpc.co.uk/) but I can't vouch for them, as I have never bought from them.

EDIT: And the Linux Emporium (http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/products/laptops/)

I should probably add that I also order stuff from Overclockers (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/) and CCL (http://www.cclcomputers.co.uk/), though not as often as Novatech.

It's weird, from the stuff I found through the link gn2 posted, people seem to think they're either great or terrible.

That's often the case with many retailers and service providers, but would you risk the price of a new computer on a company you were not 100% confident of?

I wouldn't, which is why I bought my new laptop from Ebuyer.
