Okay, I have checked other sources and I should most likely reinstall ubuntu-desktop. I just want to make sure it's this, because fixing this will take some time that I don't want to be wasted.
So I tried to copy a file (500MB .rar) (by drag-and-drop or terminal, same thing happens), but (x)ubuntu stopped responding. The processor graph shows 100% use, but there's no usual processor cooling fan hum. All windows go dead, the panel goes dead, the desktop goes dead. After several minutes the computer is still absolutely irresponsive, so I had to cut the power. I log in again, but all I see is a grey background, no panel, no icons, no nothing.
So, ubuntu-desktop or not?
Also, someone knows what might be the case of the crash when copying files (it has happened several times already)?
