I don't believe that Nvidia driver need to be open to work correctly.

But it would be nice.

Sorry if i posted in wrong forum, thanks for moving.

Some games that i like to play crash under the closed source drivers, and from what i have read this has been going on for quite sometime without being resolved. Maybe it because the games are played by a small number of people Nvidia don't see at as a priority, If they were open source anyone who knew what they were doing could fix them.

The chances of Nvidia open-sourcing their driver is quite bleak, especially since their driver works quite well. AMD has not open-sourced their fglrx driver either, but they just release the specifications of their cards so that they may benefit the creators of the open-source drivers, but AMD didn't do so because they wanted to, they were driven by the fact that fglrx used to be very unreliable and due to the quite large numbers of relatively unhappy Linux ATi users.

About an open-source Nvidia driver, perhaps you may interested in nouveau (http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/), although it isn't funded by/related to Nvidia in any way.
