Linux counter program

I have no clue how to program (though I'd like to learn), but why doesn't someone make a program to work on all Linux distros that counts how many people have Linux? Seems like it couldn't be too difficult. It could even update a server when it connects to the Internet...
Just going to guess here, but i'm thinking simple Java would be the best option.

First question that comes to mind with that question is: Why?

Second issue: I wouldn't be comfortable with having something like that in my distribution reporting to some count server every time I connect.

Third issue: Isn't that what the (optional) registrations are for?
