This is a message I received from a friend:
Hi Phil:
I really appreciate your help! I am experienced using MS XP Home Edition
and have had no problems with the HP Business Inkjet 2200 printer. It is connected to the computer via a parallel port. I followed all your
instructions. The printer blinks as if it is going to print and never stops blinking.
I disconnected the printer, started the setup again and after setting the
printer up and making it the default, I clicked "print a test page" which
resulted in a whole lot of blinking and no printout.
I am completely new with Ubuntu, having just downloading it last week. The program is much more complex than I expected. Perhaps I made a mistake in not partitioning my C drive.
I did successfully make the Ubuntu cd disk. Would you suggest deleting the whole thing and starting over?
I feel guilty in bothering experienced people such as you, however, I do not know where to turn to to get help.
Please advise, and again a thousand thanks for your interest in a UBUNTU
NEOPHYTE, .
We'll skip over the part where my friend thinks I'm an expert and hopefully invite as much input as possible. Whenever he goes through all the steps, setting the printer as default etc., he still gets error message that printer is not connected. The advice of REAL experts would be much appreciated. Thank you
Phil
p.s. I offered the Turboprint alternative already.

What version of Ubuntu is being used? The 2200 Business Inkjet (http://hplip.sourceforge.net/models/bij/hp_business_inkjet_2200.html) should work out of the box.

What instructions did you give your friend? All that should have been needed was to plug in the printer, and it should have worked.

Sef,
My friend is using Hardy Heron 8.04 and I agree that his printer should be working out of the box, however.....
I advised him to go through the setup process again, ensuring New Printer and not New Class is selected.
I asked if there were any other printers connected - there are not.
Then referred him to System>Preferences>Default Printer.
Also mentioned the option of Turboprint should there be no joy.

The vast majotiry of HP printers work in ubuntu. If it is not, go to the HP linux site and download their self extracting installer. The process takes a while, but it has always works well as far as I know. http://hplip.sourceforge.net/downloads.html

You beat me to it. I was having problems with my hp printer a few weeks ago. It worked out of the box.. then just stopped working with no indication to why.

Then i installed the http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ drivers and voila! Perfect print everytime.

Good luck. =)
