problems installing dvd-rw - pioneer bdc202bk

After installing hardy, my CD-ROM is not being recognised.
the model is a Pioneer BDC-202BK 5x Blu-Ray Reader.

whenever i put in a disc, no icon appears in the desktop. when going through the file system, the folder is empty with no items.

any ideas?

If you leave the cd in the tray and reboot the system is it recognized then?

just tried this but still not being recognised.
i can hear the drive working, but eventually stops and nothing showing on the disc. have tried with several discs, all have the same problem.
