I've been running 32-bit 8.04 for a while. Decided to upgrade to the x64 version. I'm running an HP Pavillion dv2000. When I try to install, it tells me something along the lines of

This version requires an x86-64 COY and I have an i686 CPU

As far as I'm aware I should be able to run 64-bit Ubuntu.

Have I perhaps got the wrong CD? I have Ubuntu 8.04 AMDx64 and I understand this should work for Intel CPU also.

Thanks,
Jono

You can't install the 64-bit version of Ubuntu in your HP system since you're using a 32-bit arch processor.

Core Duo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core) = x686 - 32-bit
Core 2 Duo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2) = x86_64 - 64 bit

Also, Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit or 64-bit version can be installed on an Intel or AMD 64-bit processor.

Oh dear... that's very 'egg on face' type stuff!

Thanks for the help.
