Problem upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04

I have been using 7.10 with no problems. Today I installed all current updates for 7.10, then upgraded to 8.04. All went normal, including the normal login screen for 8.04. However, the 8.04 desktop appears for about 3 seconds before going black and back to the same login screen. No error messages - just repeat login screens. Anyone have any ideas on why 8.04 seems to be rebooting back to the login screen? Thanks.

Have you gone into safe mode? Click on options in the log in window to get in to safe mode.

Thanks for the reply Sef. Yes, I tried the "Failsafe Gnome" session under options. That lets me in to the 8.04 desktop, but I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Any further ideas? Thanks.
