View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Marjor Problems In Ubuntu

It all started when I was away on vacation and remotely logged on via FreeNX. I noticed that certain things were not working, like the Ubuntu menu/taskbar. Then I logged out then back in and waited for it to start, but it didn't. Luckily I had Putty SSH with me so I could reboot it manually. This problem occurred off/on while I was away. When I got back I realized how bad it was immediately because none of the menus were working and Firefox wouldn't start when I click a desktop icon. The whole thing was also slow as a bug. I pressed CTRL+ALT+Backspace logged in and nothing not even a desktop background. I tried a different account which worked for a while then quit. Reboot and it works for a little while then stops. Maybe my computer is mad at me cause it felt physically neglected during the time I was away IDK :lolflag:. Thats pretty much all my problems in a nutshell. By the way I am running 8.04 Hardy Heron.

O.k. since I think this is a problem with the Gnome desktop how would I go about removing it.

I've tried

sudo aptitude remove gnome
sudo aptitude remove gnome-desktop
sudo aptitude remove gnome-base
sudo aptitude remove ubuntu-desktopYet it doesn't appear to remove anything

Sounds like the same problem I am having now. I had just installed Java so I could run Azureus and when I rebooted the desktop didn't come back. I got the background but that was all. No panels top or bottom. But I don't want to remove gnome, I want to recover/restore it. How can I do that? Could I boot into recovery mode and do some sudo apt-get command?

Thanks,

Wayne

Thats a joke right? this might help me (I made a thread with my problem) but how can I paste all that in the terminal if it does not have access to anything? If I could access the graphical environment to reach internet, copy the code and then paste it in the terminal... I would not need the code!
