ok, so i turned on my computer today, logged into the latest version kernel that had installed through the update manager (something something 19 i think, rather than 16) however, it had no idea what graphics card, monitor and w/e else, all my settings were wrong as well (no panels etc.) i rebooted, tried again, and it did a disk check, which it said had failed :(

however, when i rebooted again and booted to the older kernel, everything worked fine; except my graphics card (nvidia 8600gt). I figured I could reenable it from the hardware drivers bit, but it doesn't even show up.

can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how to fix it?

EDIT: hmmm. disk check failed on restart, which prompted me to do it manually (ie press Y a lot of times). Upon finishing this, everything is back to normal :s
