Hello...
The reason I posted this thread is for people to know some of the best apps out there, not only for Ubuntu but for other distros as well.

I know the word "best" is subjective, but then I just want to hear your thoughts. This thread may also be a help for those who are just searching for apps to play with.

Okay. I'll start.

Personally, I like Amarok as my Music player. I think it is better than Windows Media Player 11.

When you are geeky enough, you can download wmbinclock, a binary clock that can impress yourself and your friends (I tried it, and it's really cool.).

Just post here your hidden jewels. :)

finch, naim, cmus, mc, screen, jwm/*box/any WM (I know they're not an app).

uh.

alsaplayer, leafpad, gimp, filezilla, electric sheep (awesome screen saver) ...

The thing I do the most with my computer is surf.. so I think I have to say Swiftweasel here, a lighter version of Firefox.

For MSN activities I use "Emesene" .. light, customizable and fast MSN-client.

I listen to music via the above mentioned Amarok player.

I use Swiftdove as my mailclient, as I'm used to Mozilla from earlier. (Like Swiftweasel, this is a lighter version of Mozillas Thunderbird)

I use Gnomebaker for my cd/dvd recording needs.. it does what I need it to do, so I'm satisfied.

And for the movie watching, there is VLC. It does it's job.

Claws Mail is an awesome, fully function, yet lightweight mail client.

+1 for Conky. It replaces every gnome system info app all by itself.

I have mine telling me the date, time, CPU activity, CPU temp, RAM usage, SWAP usage, disk space for each partition, the top 4 CPU-consuming processes, the top 4 memory-consuming processes, my IP address, wireless strength, network name, up-speed and down-speed.

And it only takes up a column on the right side of my screen and it's always on the desktop, so it doesn't even "take up space." Conky RULES!

Pidgin is a very useful IM client.

Nethack is a very addictive game- surely the most important Linux app.

Battle for wesnoth (package wesnoth-all) has to be one of the greatest gpl game ever.

Miro is also one of my favorite, to get regular video shows.

A little old-school, but konqueror is still one of the most full-featured file / web browser.

3 Emacs fans? Such a sad day that anyone would choose that over Vim :(.

I've been a Vim user since 1996 (more or less), I have modal interfaces, hjkl navigation and vim-like shortcuts in every program that supports them (Long Live Vimperator!), but still I use emacs (in viper mode, of course).

My experience with Vim has always been excellent, and I still use it on a regular basis, so I will never say a bad word about it, but there came a time for me (after using Vim to write a gazillion lines of HTML, XML, Perl, C++, Java, SQL, PL/SQL and whatnot, putting together a really big collection of vim plugins, and writing myself thousands of lines of vimscript) when Vim finally showed its limitations, and there wasn't much left to do than to start hacking the Vim source code, or to give emacs a try. Since I'm no big fan of C, last year I decided to try first the second option. I never regretted it, and I don't think I'll ever do.

For the Vim power user, emacs is not just another editor, but a superior level of editing power. Just keep your mind open and you'll get here sooner or later (though probably later than sooner, if you have some kind of life).

Cheers,

Music: one mplayer command in an init script randomly plays out of my subdirectories of ~/Music

EDIT: you might at first might not notice the difference between Terminator and the other terminal emulators. The difference is: Terminator can split the Terminal window in many subwindows(it's better than tabs)

i don't think i've ever used similar apps as good as k3b and gimp. krita looks like it might rival gimp, but i'm just too used to gimp to ever give krita much of a fair chance. and, i've had trouble with other burners. k3b is just great. it's worth the bloat.

Blender is a really good application if you are really in 3D image generation and animation.

I earlier said that kate is my favorite text editor, but still I prefer, if a Linux version exists, Notepad++. For Windows users: this is really a good replacement for notepad++. Also, notepad++ is an open-source software. Just visit their site to DL the source code, the program, or both.

Lotus Symphony? But I doubt whether it'll cut it. You can try it though.
Also you have KOffice, AbiWord(GNOME Office), etc.

Also there is also Thinkfree Office which is paid and has a Linux version unless I'm much mistaken.
Also there is ElOffice, but it is paid too.

.avi and .mp4 are both container formats, the extension says nothing about the content. If you just want to transmux the contents of an avi file into an mp4 container, you can use MP4Box.

I believe MP4Box is included in the gpac package.

usage

MP4Box -add youravifile.avi video.mp4

If you want to convert your avi file to another format because you need your video to match specific requirements (for example: iPod capability) you can use Avidemux.

If you just want to play the file on your computer, there is no need for conversion at all.

Something which I notice hasn't been mentioned is the great App pyRenamer which is used to rename a huge amount of files according to a pattern, with substitutions and a bunch of other methods. As the name suggest, it is written in Python.
It's wonderful for anyone who like me is a bit of a hobby fascist when it comes to order amongst files and folders. My manga folders are now ordered by name: chapter - episode and in folders with 25 episodes per folder => sweet.

As for totem vs VLC; VLC is great because of it's customizability but is a bit bloated (and the sound scrathes on my eee 901). Totem is good for just watching video, but when it somes to customizabilty, IT SUCKS! The preferences department is ridiculously small.

VLC seems to be the most-cited favorite all-in-one player for everybody using any linux, why isn't VLC the default?

Usenet - Lottanzb (get it here: http://www.lottanzb.org/)

Thanks for the tip, I just tested LottaNZB, and I LOVE IT! :D

Still, I'd say my favorite Linux app is Wine, which allows me to play most of my favorite games in my favorite OS. :) As for other needs, I mostly use the pre-installed programs.

Amarok, I just spent a crapload of time trying to set up Andlinux+Vista+Amarok to sync iPod on my parents' computer but it failed at the last second (saw iPod but Amarok wouldn't let me copy files or view files from the database, I could browse it fine in Konqueror and Konsole though...). I can't stand any Windows media players, although I just discovered Mediamonkey and it looks pretty good, but Amarok is FTW :-D

Some others:
Nano
Kopete and Pidgin (use both, not at same time of course though :-P)
Firefox
Frets on Fire (FoFiX) (w00t)
PCmanfm (light, fast, lots of features, GOOD RIGHT CLICK EXTRACTING AND COMPRESSING, sorry for caps, I can't stand not having that :-P)
Wine (SimCity 4, COD2, lots of other stuff)
