What is an Ubuntu Live CD? How can I make one, and how do I boot into it??

I have not tried to reinstall Ubuntu after it erased my windows XP partition. Will booting into a live session allow me to partition the drive from there? I have a 250GB HD and I want to give 40-60GB or so to Ubuntu.

HELP PLEASE.

Thanks

Ubuntu Live CD allows you to enjoy Ubuntu without touching your computer. It loads in RAM. Download iso from here:

Bur it to disk. To boot, make CD first in the boot order in BIOS.

Definitely check out those links Puma gave you!
And to answer your question about partitioning, there is a partition editor on the Live CD (under the System menu). Using a Live CD is the best way to partition, because the hard drive is "unmounted" (not in use) when you are running the Live CD.
Definitely educate yourself on what you need to do before messing with the partition editor, so that you don't have any more "accidents." :)
