Installing Hardy with Nvidia GeForce 6800

I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 on a friends computer and having the following issue.

Default resolutions are working,but as soon as I try and use the restricted drivers I get the following error message:

"Can not display this video mode"

I have to exit and restart in safe mode and disable the restricted drivers.

Graphics card =

Any help appreciated as always!

If I can't get the Nvidia working, surely I can default back to the Intel onboard graphics card (this is a bog standard Dell so assuming it has one in it) and have decent 1280x1024 resolution available?

I'm actually having the SAME problem with my GeForce 6800 GTO. With the restricted driver I get the low-graphics screen.

I've tried EnvyNG, automatic drivers, nvidia website, formatted again. Only works with the included driver and some things need the other driver.

Anyone? I'd hate to have to put windows back on :(

I would not mind bying a new video card, but would it solve the problem???

checked my BIOS settings and tried every possible setting...no luck...

bought a new card...NX8400 (34 EUR)
removed all previously installed drivers
started envy...ready

so I have a leftover now...Geforce 6800...
