Interested in a small tablet computer running Debian? Check out Nokia 770 (http://www.nokia.com/770)*.

The first version might not be a Windows Mobile killer, but it looks promising, and is definitely a nice geek toy. What is remarkable about the system is not the device itself, but the software development platform Maemo (http://maemo.org), which is open source. This means that
hacking the device is entirely possible
other manufacturers can build Maemo-devices too

If you ask me, this is very cool. Wish I had some spare euros though, the thing costs 369 around here...

To anyone interested in hacking it: I've been playing with the development platform and it really does look good to me... If you've developed for Gnome, you'll hit the ground running. Installing the environment is fairly straightforward (in fact Ubuntu and Debian are their recommended choices).

* only available for select European countries so far (http://direct.nokia.com/Countries.aspx?u=/Product.aspx?model=770).

Whoa, that is one cool toy. Now find a way to 'accidently' break my old one...

I agree. I haven't had a chance to test the thing in real everyday use, but I did get to try one out: It feels pretty responsive, the web browser especially works fine and the screen looks magnificent -- a lot better than any device I've seen so far.

There aren't many applications yet, but I expect that to change fast: Porting GTK apps does not seem to be that difficult.

Looks cool, but really - I dont have much use for it. Sure, it'd be cool, but if I am going to use the internet I have to be downloading something which I cant do on that. I could browse around ubuntu forums and talk but aside from that all my internet activities have to do with downloading/uploading things. (Or playing UT: GOTY online...)
