Recently Xorg has become very unstable after several hours (update list below). Something in the latest update has caused Xorg to loose the mouse, but there is some other instability besides this.
The mouse just stops working several hours after boot, but the keyboard still works fine. To get the mouse working again, I just alt-tab to the window I was working in and the mouse works fine again for a while. When the mouse stops working the first time, the scroll "wheel" never functions again until reboot. When I reboot, everything is fine for a few hours, which says that it's not a configuration problem.
The mouse is an Alps GlidePoint trackpad, but it looks like Xorg is seeing a standard PS/2 mouse. That's fine.
I'm not sure what those ACPI interrupts are, but here's the output from dmesg:

(On a completely side note, what are the units of the timestamp on the left side of dmesg? This certainly didn't happen 26 minutes or 26 hours after boot, probably around the 8 hour mark.)
So this psmouse.c is causing the problem? Why did it suddenly stop working? How can I fix this? It's really frustrating trying to use a slow computer with no mouse.
After reading this thread here, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=794670, I added i8042.reset i8042.nomux to the kernel boot parameters in menu.lst. Nothing changed.
When the mouse starts behaving erratically, Xorg also stars having problems. Applications are really slow, and opening a terminal sometimes takes 10 seconds.
When looking at the System Monitor widget in Gnome, it sometimes shows a CPU usage of up to 80%. However, using top or htop in a terminal shows that no more than 5% of the CPU is in use at any time. I'm not sure what the difference is in measurement.
I've looked in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but there doesn't seem to be any error messages there. When I grep for "mouse":
(II) LoadModule: "mouse"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//mouse_drv.so
(II) Module mouse: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
(==) intel(0): Silken mouse enabled
Is there a Xorg error file somewhere?
