gedit overriding highlight mode for .html.erb when doctype in at line 1

I have added mime types for .html.erb, they work fine for most files, but layout files have a doctype so something in gedit is automatically switching rails layout files to html rather than rhtml... anyway round this? id rather it just work off detecting the extension or mime type which i can control
Any thoughts?
