I have googled for installing the recent version of ubuntu on a usb flash disk however they all asume that I have constant internet connection. I use the broadcom and sadly as ubuntu starts up I have no net no anything. Is there an alternative to installing Ubuntu on a pendrive?

Have you tried this (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-from-usb-stick.html) or this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick) how-to?
