I have hardy right now but it keeps freezing so i wanted to downgrade to 7.10. But i want to keep my files and preferences can i do that?

You can if you have a separate /home partition. If you don't; you can make one:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome
You can also backup /home and restore it later. I'm not sure if your Hardy settings will work with Gutsy.

Thanks so when i install 7.10 it will ask me to keep the home folder.

You have to go Manual and choose the old partitions. Just DON'T FORMAT /HOME. You can ignore /swap.

Thanks dude, I noticed the freezing right after my brother asked me to install it on his pc.
