Im installing xubuntu on my brothers old compaq desktop. Its like 5 years old, but fits the minimal requirements. I put in the 8.04.1 desktop cd for a 32-bit system. It comes up and i hit RETURN on the install xubuntu and nothing happens, so i waited for 15 minutes and still nothing. So i put in the alternate cd 6.06 figuring that its older and might work. I check the cd for defects when it comes up and it loads the kernal then goes black and white text comes up saying: uncompressed Linux... OK reboot system
Any help would be great

Just in case; use the Alternate Xubuntu CD:

It's a text based installer. Easier to use, gives you more control and avoids possible hardware and/or graphics problems:

Sounds good but when install is done do you have a desktop or is it text.
Sounds dumb but I'll be killed if i give my bro text based os.

Once installed, there will be a desktop.

You end up with a full blown system. Desktop and the kitchen sink thrown in.

Thats what i thought, but that doesnt work either. It most be when i burn the ISO image.

What happens when you boot your Ubuntu CD?

It asks what language i want then shows what options i can pick i tell it to install in text mode and it does nothing. On the live cd the same thing happens. But in the earlier release it reboots to the menu.

It doesn't sound like the Alternate CD.
If you cannot install the Xubuntu Alternate CD, you'll have to go with DSL or Puppy. With your RAM, you should be able to. Here is a guide on burning isos:

I hate to get your hopes down, but I have had the same problem w/ an old Compaq. I have installed Xubuntu Hardy on several boxes, but when I tried on my Grandfather's old Compaq, it freezes every time. I have used the regular AND alternate CDs, different boot options, you name it. It still freezes. I finally installed a hard drive w/ Xubuntu already on it. It finally made it to the desktop, but THEN it froze after a few minutes. The minimum system requirements are OK. The only thing I can think of is a possible hardware or BIOS issue w/ the box.

I have tried burning with infrarecorder on xp but that doesn't work either. Could i have a bad download or is it what the other guy said and be the BIOS or bad hardware. I'm sorry for continually asking questions but the documentation only worked when i installed a 64-bit on my sony vaio. I t doesnt work with the i386

Try ImgBurn:
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Install. Go to Mode>ISO>Burn. Select 1x as the speed.

What type of Compaq? My brother gave me a Compaq Armada 7800, PII 233 MHZ, 224 megs Ram. I've been using 6.06 LTS for a while, and it works ok, but I wasn't able to get any of the newer releases (6.10, 7.04) to run. I thought I would try to upgrade to the latest 8.04.1 LTS, but if it won't go...
