If you want to encourage the uptake of odf in the UK check out and sign the petition at
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ODFinNA/
The UK government, in it's wisdom, has decided to store it's archives in ooxml format rather than an iso standard such as odf
make them change their minds!
if you are a UK citizen or UK resident please sign the petition, support open government and open formats

I wonder what the planned timeline for this is, since the OOXML specs are not even finished yet, and there will not be a single program that outputs the ISO standard OOXML for probably quite some time. I haven't followed the news about this, but didn't Microsoft announce that even they would be adding ODF support in MS Office before updating it to use the ISO version of OOXML?

And, by the way, that petition isn't exactly correct when it says the OOXML is not supported outside of MS Office -- support for the format is being slowly added to many of the Open Source office applications. It is going to take time, though, and most likely there will never be a 100% support, due to the size of the specs.
