With the ASUS EEE box being announced a little while ago what do you guys think about building a small media pc like that?

Would it be cheaper to make one or is the price ASUS has set just too good?

here's a couple of links to the pc: Link 1 (http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=11854) Link 2 (http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14276)

The Lack of it being able to handle 1080p videos really does put me off. I've read that a pc with that sort of proccessor would also struggle with 720p video.

building it yourself is always cheaper.

only the nice box can be as expensive as all the components. Get a cheap box.

also, add in a good video card (to replace the integrated one). Probably a geforce 6200 or better.

else if you want something pre-built get a shuttle kPC

I don't know, I mean in term of size, can you really build a box this small? But if the size doesn't matter to you, any computer at that range($) are better then the EEE box.

in terms of size the gPC mini is much better

also koala mini (more expensive than gpc mini) http://www.system76.com/

also more mini boxes: http://www.zareason.com/

You might want to look at mini/nano-ITX boards and components and compare price. Some will do 1080i no problems

Why wait for the Eee Box, just get a Linutop (http://www.linutop.com/linutop2/index.en.html) now.

It has no fans so is quieter than the Eee Box which has a nasty annoying little fan in it.

If you want 1080 video, you'll need a good Core 2 Duo.
Maybe a Mac Mini might do the job?

The linitop looks really good but it's pretty expensive. After you add the 19.6% VAT charge they qoute for Europe i think it would be better just to get an asus EEE box as the specs are quite a bit better.

gPC mini has more than enough power

Thanks for the suggestions.

I was thinking about making a small pc like a shuttle but putting a blu ray drive in there. Anybody done this, how did it work?

I have never built a pc before let alone a small one. Are there any sites that have a sort of checklist of parts or something along those lines?

Thanks
