I am posting this on behalf of a friend.
He installed a USB2.0 card on his old computer, then Windows wouldn't boot with or without it, so he installed Ubuntu. And then the USB 2.0 card still failed to work, and the integrated sound card was also not detected.
The sound card works on OpenSUSE, strangely. He's using a VIA VT8233 for sound.
I've included the dmesg, lsmod and lspci as a text file here:
