it just kind of gives you a weird feeling in your body. it's not really like drugs, not that i'd know of course, *cough* ;), but it's still pretty cool.

Well, I ran it in console wit the command "gnaural -p" and that started it with no GUI just sound. Then I used "gnaural -pi" which puts some output into the console as to what it's doing. I then started Gnaural and it just worked. Gnaural2 also worked after doing this with just Gnaural.

You know, I did too. I mean, I could hardly type properly after about a half hour listening to this stuff. It really does put me into an altered state, like drugs or alcohol could. I mean, it's not as bad as say my drunk texting:oops: but the effect is there. I wonder what a few hours could do? Lets experiment with this and see what people's reactions are.

The only thing it does for me is suppress my imagination. And simulate that feeling of "distance" I get when there's a lot of stuff going on (like at a party.)

Pretty boring.

Although it does sound kinda soothing too.

You don't really get "high" per se off of oxygen. Really breathing in oxygen (I prefer a mask to the nose tubes) clears your head and makes you feel refreshed, more than it makes you feel high. Oxygen is a unique experience, as it doesn't really put you into an altered state of mind like other things can.

Also, a note for those who get nothing from it, try just relaxing. Don't go searching for an experience, let the experience come to you. Sit back, relax, close your eyes, and clear your mind.

Meh. It left me with stuffy ears like when I listen to Rock 'n' Roll too loud. It's boring, not too relaxing. It's one of those perception things that work on only some of the people. If it calms you down, good for you. I suggest listening to good classical music rather than listening to this.

Onyros

Hehe, a lot of you who had "transcendental" effect work upon you, must've been taking drugs from the start.

It's a proven effect, white/pink noise CD's are sold for people with insomnia (like myself) and they work perfectly... I just wish I had known about this one before.

It works, and it works very, very well. There are a few presets around, for different purposes, and the ones I tried were pretty much spot on.

There's even a preset to emulate the Tibetan monks' chant, and it's a really beautiful setup. There's another one that emulates the sound of waves breaking on the shore, and it's as relaxing as the real thing.

Binaural stimulation is also known to stimulate musical creativity, there are a few composers out there who use these effects to kick off their own musical composition.

To think that a few months ago I recorded my vaccuum cleaner on a loop to get the same effect, makes me think I'd been living on the Stone Age.

I have to ask! Did it work? The vaccuum cleaner? Definitely! I actually have two models at home that I tried. Let me clear it up, I didn't buy them specifically to generate white noise, they're used to clean up, really! :P

I have an old Hoover vaccuum cleaner which is pretty loud, but also that generates the most entrancing noise I've ever heard; and then there's the new one, a Nilfisk Power vaccuum cleaner that is somewhat less noisier, works better for meditation than for inducing sleep, though.

The thing is: predisposition generates results. These sounds are inducing, not coercive. I don't want to touch a forum taboo, but certain "consciousness expanders" work the same way: the way you approach the entire experience define the results. (I'll just point whoever's interested in this stuff to Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception" for full understanding of what I mean)

If you are anxious and in need of relaxation you cannot start using these files fearing the result: the anxiety will grow. The key is using these sounds to attain the result YOU want; the same works for when you want to keep alert: you use the files with a purpose, even though some are better oriented toward specific results.

funny you say that, the noise of a hoover always makes me sleepy. i read somewhere that it's because it sounds something similar to the conditions you experienced as a foetus in the womb, but that could be nonsense.

absolutely right, this applies to everything. you have to have the right mindset, or it won't work in the way you expect. it's not like magic.

if anyone is interested in exploring this further, here's a quick rundown of the different frequencies and purported effects.

Brain waves

Main article: Electroencephalography

Frequency range Name Usually associated with:
> 40 Hz Gamma waves Higher mental activity, including perception, problem solving, fear, and consciousness
13–40 Hz Beta waves Active, busy or anxious thinking and active concentration, arousal, cognition
7–13 Hz Alpha waves Relaxation (while awake), pre-sleep and pre-wake drowsiness
4–7 Hz Theta waves Dreams, deep meditation, REM sleep
< 4 Hz Delta waves Deep dreamless sleep, loss of body awareness

you can adjust these ranges with the "beat" slider in gnaural (put a check in the box by it. If a beat feels overwhelming, increase white noise.

Good information, having gone through sleep studies where they measure these waves I thought about posting information like this. There have been some some interesting studies with monks and meditation and the brain waves produced I will try and find it. I think this has been on the forums before though. :)

You need headphones do to the way the software works. It doesn't really create a pulsation. It plays one low frequency into your each, and then a slightly different one into your other each. Apparently, your brain processes that aas a pulsation. If you don't use headphones, then both ears will hear both frequencies, and it won't work.

I haven't tried it yet, I want something a little more mild before I try it out.

July 14th, 2008, 03:43 PM
For those of you that say it doesn't do anything, or that it gives you headaches, you should read about binaural beat waves, their effects, and the fact that different people respond to different frequencies. Play a little with the sliders before saying it doesn't work.

Maybe this will help my tinnitus. Mine is a loud hissing, not a ringing in my ears. Caused by years in the manufacturing industry and VERY loud cars/music/firearms and no hearing protection. If you are in your teens to thirties PLEASE use hearing protection.
Usually the only way to ease the hissing is to substitute white noise at a different frequency and volume; this works for about a half an hour.

After stumbling on to this thread I did some looking around the ol' internets and came upon this website that has 11 different streams of binaural beats. Each stream is designed for different moods/applications; Super brain (Recommended before problem solving activities), Coffee break (Recommended instead of coffee drinking), Aspirin (Recommended against headaches), Lucid dreams (Recommended for intense dreams, Out of body experience and Astral projection). Currently listening to Red Bull (Recommended for energy boost and for reducing sleeping hours). Let me know what you think...

I will most def give this a try. I'm gonna give Red Bull a go, as I'm usually pretty worn out after work. I wish they were available for download.

Right click the one you want to download and click on "Save Link As" or something similar. :)

Ended up doing it while it was playing via MPlayer plugin to get an mp3 otherwise you get a useless m3u playlist file.

This may well cure one or two dependencies I have. Too late today.

If you want to listen to stuff to make you feel weird try Hawkwind. They`ve been perfecting the art for 30 years.

Can't get it for 64 bit, huh?

Just as well, it's prolly a Rick roll.

nice to have such apps for this. :) i used to just get all hands-on manually making my own in audacity n mixing it up weaving it into my atmospheric soundscapes. ...i'll probably play around making more now i have this at my disposal. :) yay.
