Is there a system monitor that can be embeded in the toolbar? Possibly next to the vwm's?

I miss not being able to see cpu, ram, and net usage at all times.

Yes - there's "System Monitor", which can be added by right-clicking on the panel to which you wish to add it. You might want to tinker with the preferences to get it to show the information you're interested in

You can alo install the hardware monitor applet (it's in the repositories) which brings you even more options for system aspects you can monitor.

I really miss this feature in Gnome 3.

While I think Ubuntu has done an admiral job making Gnome 3 usable, the lack of any customization on the top panel is really sad; for adding things like system monitor widget, a stock ticker, etc, all of which used to be possible under Gnome2.
