My friend has an Acer Extensa Series 5420/5120 and he wants Ubuntu 8.04 like me. He's having problems though and the only way I can communicate with him is through IMs. He has a disk with Ubuntu on it but it won't install. He really needs help so please, help! http://ubuntuforums.org/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

You might need the Alternate CD.

What happens when you try to install? Please provide as much detail as possible.

May I ask where you are getting your disks? I can get 50 for $15. I have never heard of a $20 disk. Unless it is a very  very unique one.

See if bios is set to boot from the CD drive. That is most likely why. It has to boot from the CD drive not the hard drive.

Make your cd drive the first boot device, your hard drive the second. let us know if you have any more trouble.

Have him restart his PC, get the PC to boot from the CD/DVD drive by hitting F11 or F12 ( might be ALT or Delete too), you get the option of booting one time from the DVD/CD drive. But you have to watch the screen for when it sayes "press any key to boot from CD or DVD" or something like that.

I not really sure but do a disk check to make sure your disk is good.

I not really sure but do a disk check to make sure your disk is good.

i check a disk with HDD SELF TEST and all three tests gone succeeded
TEST 1 (QUICK)
test succeeded
TEST 2 (COMPREHENSIVE)
test succeeded
TEST 3 (S.M.A.R.T)
test succeded

What 2 do man ?!!!
Im at least 48 hours without sleep just to set ubuntu at my notebook.
And if anyone need configuration of my notebook:
HP nx7400
dual core 1.66 Ghz
1 GB ram
80 GB ATA FUJITSU harddisk

Ok well the first thing to do is to get some sleep.
Second, I would check to see if all your computers hardware is working. Like the harddrive. You might want to install another OS to test it out unless you have a different way. Then if you are only putting Ubuntu on the harddrive I would do a full format to make sure that you are starting from scratch.

What do you do if you can not change the BIOS? I have an old IBM NetVista machine. I forgot how I got Ubuntu 7 installed. In the instructions for 8 Hardy Herron it says make a "Smart Boot Manger Floopy" I see that on CD, but can not get it onto the floppy.

I think your computer might be to old if you can not change the bios on it. I do not think it could handle hardy. I have never used a floppy disk to boot a computer. That is I never got it to work....
