Hello all,

I am having some trouble when trying to activate multiple desktops, I cannot change the default from 1, it is grayed out when I try. Furthermore, I cannot get a cube effect when hitting Ctrl + Alt + -->, it only shows two desktops (both which are labeled desktop1). I uninstalled compbiz and reinstalled it to no avail. I have done some searches and most say to uninstall and reinstall compbiz, so I am looking to the forum for some assistance. I appreciate your time for reading my post.

Thank you

Hello!
Have you tried right-clicking on the two desktops in the lower right corner of the screen, then going to "Preferences" and changing "Columns" to 4?

Yes, I have four desktops in the lower right corner, but it only acts like one.....I go to rotate the desktops in a cube and I only have one desktop, I have been searching for days!! I did a fresh install of 8.04 as well

First of all, it's the top number that should change - the vertical size should remain 1. Can you not increment the top number to 4 (if you want a cube)? I don't see where it's grayed out, but you should be able to either move the slider, type a number, or move the counter up/down control.

hey again,

Did a bit of searching and I think this thread is on about the same thing as you are experiencing;

Give it a try

Edit: Saw the above post, yes, I've got horizontal virtual size set to 4 and that should do the trick for you to.

Agroth,

thanks, I got the cube working, which is sweet. The one bummer is that I want 4 different backgrounds on the 4 desktops, and if I change it on one desktop it changes it for all 4, it is ticky tacky, but one of those things you want to get squared away.

KDE has that capability; hopefully, one day Gnome will, too.

EDIT: Found a page that shows how to set it up in CCSM, works perfectly for me in Gutsy!

The only down part is that you cant highlight anything on the desktop but that's fine for me at least since I don't use any icons on the desktop.

I don't really keep much on the desktop, either, although I like to keep temporary things there, much like a real-life desktop. I'll see if it's worth it, or try that window manager.

Yeah, that window manager, walpapoz only change the desktop background when you switch to that workspace though but I guess that works as well if you want to use the desktop :)

No problems mate! Glad it worked out for you. May want to change the title to [SOLVED] so others can see that it worked out in the end :)
