I got mine and it activated fine in store. I am very happy with it. Guess I am one of the lucky ones.

It happened because Apple's servers went down from demand.
I also figure an MSN report would be a bit biased :P

Another reminder why activating in the store is a Bad Idea. There's no question that Apple learns lessons, but I strongly question the effectiveness of their QA team. They seem to only learn after a disastrous introduction; after people pay them to test their products. If it weren't for that reality distortion field, Apple would be completely non-existent by now.

The MobileMe release (http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/apple-fesses-up-to-mobileme-transition-difficulties/) is rather clumsy, too. Turns out they have appallingly ugly code in place that restricts the service (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21762) to Windows and Mac systems running Firefox 2+, IE 6+ or Safari 3+, otherwise complaining about the browser not being one of their 'chosen few'. Way to alienate a huge number of portable devices, bozos.

Granted, it's only a Javascript thing (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=201716&postcount=57), but it's still an unnecessary pain. Further, it makes it visible to all how clueless this particular filtering is. (Pretty ugly script, too).

Go ahead and see for yourself by browsing to Me.com (http://me.com) aboard any Linux machine. That Continue button does nothing. The jerks...
Then again, I didn't sign up for .Mac to begin with. This just further demonstrates why I never will; their changes are alienating Apple's own users. I thought MobileMe was meant to be, oh, mobile?

Edit:
And here's a proper Apple support thread. Watch this space (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1593495&tstart=0); could be entertaining :P

And supposedly MobileMe had some terrible stability problems.
Like Windows ME.

Do you enter a contract instore with this one? With the first gen iphone you just bought the iphone instore, you had to enter a contract through iTunes later (leading people to do naughty things and not enter the contract, but unlock the iPhone instead! )

I'm assuming that they have fixed that particular loophole, with the store now entering you into a contract before you leave? Although I think you still have some form of "activation" through iTunes later?

Actually, when the iTunes store went down, AT&T sent some people (who were in the process of activation) home to activate it there, which gives them the opportunity to unlock it and let the hack spread.

I have learned that Apple fails at web management.

Apple also fails at not locking in their products :(

So it was a one off that those people had to activate at home? Which means that all new iPhone customers enter into a contract instore this time around?

Yes, I had to do this for mine.

EPIC FAIL on the part of Apple there. The success of the first iPhone was mainly down to jailbroken handsets. They have just made the iPhone 3G much harder to get hold of for someone who doesn't care for an 18 month contract that will cost them at least £800 over 18 months.

Why don't they ever give people what they want? It needs to always be a battle with Apple :(
