sound problem

I am using Ubuntu Hardy & up to date

I have never been able to get any sound from Alsa so I installed OSS4.1
and I have sound.
Sound is OK in Totem, Mplayer, and VLC but very poor in Rhythmbox (static).
My big problem is in Firefox when I want to get news videos or music videos. The video is OK but there is no sound.
Can someone tell me where to look for the problem? I am still learning Linux so it will need to be a little detailed
