Try the Alternate Xubuntu CD:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/8.04/release/
If that doesn't work; try DSL or Puppy. You can also do a minimal install:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems

Pumalite is correct, and just to elaborate the reasons why, the minimum system requirement for the Ubuntu Live CD is 384mb of RAM. It will run on 256mb, but you have to install it using the alternate method.

If it has an ability to connect to the internet, try this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/WithFloppies but I must say the process seems very involved and with the potential for many errors. Note its age, as you will need to alter some of the commands to fit the newer distribution.
