View Full Version : [ubuntu] Updates app not working

In 8.04, the updates icon/app near the top right of the ubuntu desktop tells me i have updates available. When I try to download them, I get an error message telling me "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s)" in a dialog box. In fact, it is unable to download anything. It ultimately fails with the error message below. I am connected to the internet, so this can not be the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can fix this? many thanks!

In a terminal do:


sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade

Open up your terminal and do:


sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If that doesn't work, try to select other download server on your Software Sources.

System->Administration->Software Sources, under "Ubuntu Software" tab -> "Download From", select "Main Server". Click on Close, and choose reload on the next window that pops.

And again, in your terminal:


sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
